JGC establishes optimal design technology for power cables to reduce construction costs of power plants.

One of the challenges in introducing wind power plants has been construction costs. On February 22, 2023, JGC Holdings Corporation announced that its group company, JGC Corporation, has established optimal design technology for power cables for wind power plants. In the 6th Strategic Energy Plan announced in October 2021, it was stated that efforts would be made to expand the introduction of onshore wind power and accelerate the formation of offshore wind power projects in order to make renewable energy a primary power source; however, high construction costs have been one of the challenges. In particular, the power cables (submarine) used for the construction of large-scale offshore wind power plants with a generation capacity of 0.5 to 1 GW are costly, sometimes amounting to several tens of billions of yen. The company aims to reduce the cost of power cables in wind power plant construction by about 10%. The company has focused on the limited time when the output in wind power reaches 100% and has been working with DNV in the Netherlands since April 2021 to examine the optimization of power cables. Through "dynamic rating," which simulates wind conditions and generator output in detail, they have established optimal design technology that minimizes the excess cable size to the necessary minimum.
