The longest "overwater bridge" in India, part of the Mumbai Bay Crossing Road Construction Project, has been completed.

◆Total length of approximately 22 km IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as IIS) announced on January 19, 2024, that the offshore road bridge of the Mumbai Bay Crossing Project, which was being constructed in a joint venture with India's largest general contractor Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), has been completed, and the opening ceremony was held on January 12. The offshore road bridge, which is the longest in India, spans approximately 22 km, connecting the city center of Sewri on the peninsula side of the Mumbai metropolitan area to Navi Mumbai in the eastern suburbs across the Mumbai Bay. In this project, IIS-L&T was responsible for the construction of the offshore road bridge starting about 10 km from Sewri, and IIS carried out the production and transportation of steel deck box girders using heavy anti-corrosion coatings, which were employed for the first time in the country. ◆Contributing to the economic growth of the Mumbai metropolitan area Access between Mumbai, the economic capital of India, and Navi Mumbai, where port expansion and the construction of a new airport are planned, has been limited to one road and one railway along the Mumbai Bay, making infrastructure development an urgent issue. With the completion of this offshore road bridge, travel times between the two cities are expected to be significantly reduced, enhancing connectivity and economic growth in the Mumbai metropolitan area, as well as alleviating traffic congestion and reducing air pollution.
