Regarding the durability and termite resistance of heartwood and sapwood: The red heartwood of cedar contains a high amount of heartwood components such as tannins. In contrast, the white sapwood is actively engaged in the absorption of nutrients and moisture from the roots, functioning as a living organism. The red heartwood, after fulfilling its biological role, accumulates aged cells that become substances that deter decay fungi and insects, thus maintaining the structure of the wood. The durability of wood is determined by how resistant these accumulated substances in the heartwood are to decay fungi. Thanks to these heartwood components, the heartwood of cypress, cedar, and hinoki is considered to be resistant to decay.
