What is Obihiro cedar?
The oil content of each tree is exceptionally high! It also plays an active role as structural material for buildings.
In the southeastern part of Kyushu, in Nishi-Nippon City, Miyazaki Prefecture, there is an area known as the "Obi Forestry Region." This area corresponds to the former Obi Domain from the Edo period, and the name "Obi cedar" is derived from that domain name. "Obi cedar" is not the name of a single tree species, but rather a collective term for 18 varieties of cedar that grow in this area. The climate of Miyazaki Prefecture, which has a long coastline along the Pacific Ocean, is strongly influenced by the Kuroshio Current flowing from the equator, resulting in high temperatures throughout the year and heavy rainfall in the summer. Even among cedars, those that grow in warmer areas tend to grow faster, and their wood becomes lighter and softer. The flexibility of Obi cedar, which allows it to absorb shocks, and its particularly excellent thermal performance and workability are due to this phenomenon. *For more detailed information, please refer to the related links.
