Ground investigation 【Swedish-style sounding test】

SWS testing based on high-precision data and verification recommended by the society.

This is the Swedish sounding test (SWS test) recommended in the "Guidelines for the Basic Design of Small-Scale Buildings" edited by the Architectural Institute of Japan. We will submit two separate reports that distinguish between objective data and ground diagnosis and considerations. All personnel responsible for on-site investigations and analytical considerations are certified ISO 9001 within the company, and we conduct wear measurements of the screw points each time to ensure testing accuracy. Using the JIS A 1221 standard equipment, it supports both manual and automatic operation. A load of up to 100 kg is applied to the rod head with a screw point at the tip to measure the penetration amount. After stopping the penetration, rotation is applied, and the number of half turns (180 degrees rotation = 1) required to screw in 1 meter is measured. The sound transmitted from the rod and the penetration resistance allow for accurate differentiation between sandy soil and clayey soil, and investigation is possible up to a depth of about 10 meters in soft strata. In addition to displaying reference values for allowable bearing capacity and settlement, various additional specifications are covered, including height difference level display, collection of all-core samples using SWS penetration holes and SCSC-type samplers, confirmation of steel pipe pile support layers through PH-type SS tests, and current site surveys.

Applications/Examples of results

It applies to residential land surveys in small-scale buildings, pre-evaluation of risks such as ground subsidence and differential settlement, and the selection of reinforcement works (geo-column method, steel pipe pile method, surface improvement method). It is extremely effective in understanding the current state of terrain where weak layers are a concern, such as low-lying areas like former rice fields, old riverbeds, valley floors, reclaimed land, sandbars, and cliffs. As a practical example, it is introduced to prevent differential settlement that causes tilting in one direction and distortion of components, and is used as a design basis to avoid serious building damage such as issues with window frames, decreased airtightness, corrosion of the structure, shortened building lifespan, and significant damage to seismic performance. It also contributes to preventing mental stress and sleep disorders in residents caused by floor tilting.
